The Secret Number System That Instantly Improves Your Volleys
Every player has heard their coach say, “You’re swinging too much on your volleys!” But what’s the right size swing? And how does it change depending on the ball coming at you?
To make this simple, let’s use a number system.
Think of your backswing and follow-through each on a scale from 1 to 5.
A 5 is your biggest move — a full takeback or long finish.
A 1 means almost none at all — compact and efficient.
Here’s how to apply it:
👉 On a neutral ball, aim for a 2–1. That means a moderate takeback and a short, firm finish.
👉 If the ball is floating or slow, you might go for a 4–2. You have time, so take a little more swing and add pace.
👉 If your opponent rips it at you, use a 1–1. Stay compact, firm, and let their pace do the work.
This system helps you match your swing size to the incoming ball speed — so you can stop guessing and start reacting with confidence.
Check out my latest YouTube video where I demo each swing size and show how to adjust based on the type of volley you face.
Your volleys are about to get a whole lot more consistent.

Love your videos analyzing D1 matches. College tennis is more interesting to watch these days. Many players doing well in Challengers and on tour. You have helped my game quite a bit. Many thanks!
